Alexander: Local farms honored with Hoosier Homestead Award

STATEHOUSE (Aug. 20, 2026) – Area legislators are recognizing the latest local recipients of the Hoosier Homestead Award, which recognizes farms owned and maintained by the same family for 100 years or more.

Represented by State Sen. Scott Alexander (R-Muncie) and State Reps. J.D. Prescott (R-Union City) and Elizabeth Rowray (R-Yorktown), three locally owned farms were honored at the Indiana State Fair.

  • The Rea and Nellie (Sheets) Riggin farm in Delaware County received a Centennial and Sesquicentennial Award
  • The Wasson farm in Randolph County received a Sesquicentennial Award

The Hoosier Homestead Award Program honors families who have made significant contributions to Indiana agriculture. Instituted in 1976, the program has recognized more than 6,000 family farms that have impacted Indiana's economic, cultural and social advancement.

"It is always amazing to see hardworking farm families like these recognized for their dedication to their craft and their long-standing presence in our community," Alexander said. "Keeping a farm running for over a century is no small feat. I congratulate each of these families on this impressive achievement and thank them for the valuable work they do for our district and the state."

"Reaching the 100-year mark is an accomplishment few can claim, and these families deserve recognition for preserving a legacy that continues to benefit our local communities and Indiana agriculture," Prescott said. "Their dedication and work ethic have helped keep one of our state's most important industries strong."

"Generations of hard work have helped shape Indiana's agricultural heritage, and I congratulate these families on this remarkable achievement," Rowray said. "This recognition reflects the dedication and pride that have sustained their family farms for generations."

To be named a Hoosier Homestead, farms must be owned by the same family for at least 100 consecutive years and consist of more than 20 acres or produce more than $1,000 of agricultural products per year. The award distinctions are centennial, sesquicentennial and bicentennial – for 100, 150 and 200 years, respectively.
